Ever wonder why a engagement ring?

Ever wonder why a engagement ring?

Have you ever thought about engagement ring and why does it has to be a ring and why not a necklace or any piece of jewelry that will serve as the engagement. Ever wonder why a ring? According to history rings represent a circle which means that it has no beginning and it has no end. True love never ends…….

In Europe, engagement rings were once known as a Posie ring. It was given as a form of promise of fidelity and love.....

Engagement rings have been valued throughout history as being a physical object symbolizing a man and women's eternal love for each other, a promise of commitment towards one another. In the 21st century, especially within Western civilization, it has become a common expectation for the bride-to-be to permanently wear their ring as a means to maintain their commitment...

Engagement rings, like any other kind of jewelry, come in many different styles. Although 18 carat gold is preferred for engagement rings, common metal types such as gold, platinum, titanium, silver and stainless steel are also used for engagement rings.....

In North America and the United Kingdom, it is customarily worn on the left hand ring finger. Similar traditions purportedly date to classical times, dating back from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love".

This custom may have its origins in an ancient Egyptian myth that the finger contained a vein leading directly to the heart, or it may simply be because the heart lies slightly to the left side of the body. In Ukraine, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right hand. In Germany the ring is worn on the left hand while engaged, but moved to the right hand when married. In Poland, the engagement ring and wedding band are traditionally worn on the right hand but modern practice varies considerably......

Engagement rings can also be passed out from one generation to the next generation. We have seen the engagement ring worn by the Kate Middleton which was originally worn by the then Lady Diana, Traditionally, engagement rings are passed on to the next generation as passing on the luck of good and strong marriage for years....

Happy Wedding!!

'Chuda' an integral part of Punjabi wedding.

Spotting a newly-married Punjabi woman in India is easy. Dozens of red and cream ivory bangles adorning her wrists speak aloud about her marital status. These set of bangles in ivory, lac or plastic with intricate inlay work painted or engraved on it are adorned on the bride's wrist after a
traditional ceremony called "chuda chadana". 'Chuda' or 'Chooda' is an integral part of Punjabi wedding.

This ceremony is performed on the day of
wedding. The bride to be takes bath with
water brought from a temple and sits for this
ceremony. A 'puja' is performed by a priest.
Chooda is a set of red/maroon and cream
bangles with rich and intricate work on it. This

is brought by
the girl's maternal uncle and aunt. The interesting part is that the girl is not  supposed to see it before wearing. So it is kept covered with unboiled ('kachcha') milk in a pan. Originally, these bangles were made of ivory, but nowadays ivory has been replaced by plastic or lac. The girl's uncle makes her wear them. Once she wears them, everyone present touches it and gives her wishes for a successful married life.

Tinkling bells of the Kaleerey
The chuda ceremony can never be complete without the 'kaleerey'. These dome shaped streamers with tinkling silver and gold bells are considered auspicious for the bride. The bride's cousins and friends tie them to the chuda. They are like blessings for the bride for her new life and also to remind her of her old friends. It is said that the bride has as many friends as there are leaves in the kaleerey. So the more leaves the merrier!

Traditionally, the girl is supposed to wear it for 1.25 months or 1.25 years. A span of 1.25 is considered auspicious in almost all Punjabi traditions. But if the lady gets pregnant while she is wearing Chooda, she is required to get it off before delivery of the baby. Gradually, people have become less stringent and girls wear it as long as they want.

The 'barhaana' ceremony is generally not as elaborate as the one of wearing it. On an auspicious day ( generally the priest is asked for an appropriate date), the girl wears new clothes which are supposed to be given to her by her mother. An elder lady of the family puts 'gur'(jaggery) and ' chawal' (rice) in the girl's lap. These are supposed to be cooked and distributed to the relatives, the next day of the ceremony. Then the lady takes off the bangles from the girl's wrists and replaces them with pink/red glass bangles and a gold bangle. Then 'waarna' ( a gesture in which some money is revolved around the head and given to a poor. This is meant to keep all bad omen away) is performed for the girl. The bangles are then covered with a piece of red cloth and either given to a priest in temple or they are made to flow in a river (' jal parwah')

Aishwarya Rai in 2007:

Aishwarya Rai, known for winning the Miss World Pageant in 1994 and often quoted as the ‘most beautiful woman in the world' wore a golden lehenga sari by designer Neeta Lulla. The attire was often quoted to be a typical ‘Maglorean sari' which was draped in the fashion reflecting the traditions of ‘Bunt community' to which she belongs. Sari complemented the traditional kundan jewelry set very well.

Elizabeth Hurley in 2007:

The English model and actress who tied knot with the Indian textile heir, Arun Nayar, in 2007 also wore a pink sari for the Hindu traditional wedding. The couple specifically had two ceremonies to give equal importance to both the ethnicity. Liz was also spotted wearing sari at various occasions during her visit to India for the wedding.

Shilpa Shetty in 2009:

The winner of the reality show, Celebrity Big Brother UK in 2007, Shilpa Shetty also carried forward the tradition. Although there have been pieces of news suggesting that the Bollywood actress copied Aishwarya Rai's wedding look completely, the sari that Shilpa wore was red in color. Apart from that, the actress looked dazzling in kundan jewelry. Sari was adorned with golden embroidery work while the bride paired it with short sleeved blouse with strings and hanging arrangements.

Isha kopikkar in 2011:
