There was a time when Sangeet was a ladies affair only and was mostly conducted amongst the females on the bride’s side to herald her happiness, tease her and bless her. There would be music and dance and a little party kind of thing would go on for 3 or 4 hours.
But since almost a decade, Sangeet has assumed an altogether new avatar in context of Indian Wedding ceremony. Almost of weddings are now preceded by a Sangeet Sandhya where the people on the bride’s as well as groom’s side perform on traditional, folk or peppy Bollywood songs.

The top ten things to keep in mind while planning the Sangeet night are:


1) Choose the venue well
The venue for the Sangeet must be chosen keeping in mind the convenience of the friends and families of the bride and the groom. Make adequate arrangements for the appetizers, drinks and dinner.

2) Keep it a day or two before the wedding

Since the participation of people from both the sides is required, the Sangeet Sandhya is ideally held a day or two before the nuptial.

3) Decide the choreographer

Half the time the people who dance the best on either side take up the responsibility of planning the performances, the people and the songs. But nowadays professional choreographers are being hired for the purpose and who lend an expert touch to the overall ceremony.

4) Determine your budget

Sangeet can be an expensive affair. In most communities at least 2 to 3 lakhs and upwards amount is spent on it.

5) Decide the performers

Start planning for it at least a month in advance and make a list of all those who would be performing.

6) The bride’s side 

Sangeet ceremony is generally hosted by the Bride’s family. Thus the main family in-charge of the performances must co-ordinate with his/her counterpart from there.

7) Choose the songs well

Choose songs that suit the occasion are either very romantic or aimed at teasing the to-be-weds. Do not choose any such song that would not go down well with any of the persons present.

8) Divide the time judiciously

Appropriate the performance time judiciously between the bride’s and the groom’s family. No one should feel disadvantaged against.

9) Music system

The music system should be in good shape and the DJ must be booked at least 3 or 4 months in advance or else you may have to make do with your home theatre system.

10) Sweet and short

However grand and entertaining an affair is, it must come to an end. The Sangeet should not be longer than an hour or 90 minutes at max. After that people will start getting bored.

Summer weddings have of late become quite common and many people now deliberately plan a summer wedding. It can be fun and enjoyable if planned properly and with some precautions. Summers in several Indian cities can get quite hot and humid with day temperatures rising beyond 45 deg C at its peak.

However, here are 10 things that you should keep in mind for a summer wedding 

1. Outdoor Venue - If you have chosen an outdoor venue like a garden or a farmhouse, make sure there are several pedestal fans and greenery around so that the temperature remains cool. 

2. Indoor Venue - If you have decided to book a wedding hall then make sure it is well ventilated and has proper air conditioning since having hundreds of guest in a single hall, how so very big, can make it quite stuffy and suffocating. 

3. Size of the venue - Choose a big enough venue so that there is ample moving space and make sure that food is served somewhere away from the stage where the bride and the groom will be seated. 

4. Decoration - Choose a floral decoration with lots of roses, marigolds, tuberose, orchids etc. Also make sure the colours used for decoration are not too dark and neither too bright. Soothing colours are preferred during summers. Make sure that the flowers are put up only after sunset and have been freshly purchased. In case they have been bought earlier, keep them wrapped in a moist cloth or ice box to prevent wilting. 

5. Water and Drinks - Summers are that time of the year when anyone can get dehydrated quickly. Make sure there is ample water for all your guests in addition to other rehydrating fluids like juices, soft drinks etc.

6. Clothes - Avoid wearing heavy clothing for a summer wedding, especially when it comes to bride's dress. A heavy 'lehenga' only adds to the discomfort which a hot and humid weather causes. Try finding a wedding dress which is made from fabrics like Chiffon or Georgette or something that's made from cotton. Same goes for the groom, avoid wearing heavy dresses and go for something light and not made out of synthetic fabrics. 

7. Jewellery - Just like clothing, even jewellery can be quite a pain in the neck (pun intended) during a summer wedding. Wear something will not cause rashes if you start sweating due to the temperature. 

8. Exertion - Avoid exertion during a summer wedding, this goes specially for the bride and the groom who will have to stay awake till late in the night during their wedding day to complete all the rituals and the 'pheras'. 

9. Heavy Food - Summers are a time when people usually lose their appetite for heavy and oily foods. However, everyone enjoys lots of snacks and 'chaats', especially something like 'golgappas' or 'paani-puris' and 'dahi-bhalla' (curd based 'chaats'). Also, have ample cold juices, soft drinks etc. to help your guests beat the heat. 

10. Wedding Invitations - Make sure you send out invitations well in advance since summers are usually the time when children have their holidays and families plan their vacations. Let people know of your wedding plans as early as possible so that they can plan accordingly and be there to bless the bride and the groom.

How to Pick Wedding Colors

The colors you choose for your wedding set the tone for the entire affair, since you'll use them in every element of the day, from the bridal dress to the ribbons on the guest favors, from stage decorations to bouquet on dinner table. Using a palette of too many colors will look messy and muddled. Stick to a palette of two or three colors, making one color your primary shade and the others accents. Avoid using colors or patterns that are too trendy --- these may make your wedding seem dated when you look back at the photos years later.

Visit your ceremony and reception sites to study the colors that have been used to decorate these spaces. For example, if your reception site has dark green walls and dark brown carpet, you may feel that pale pink looks out of place. Take note of the colors used in these sites so that you can choose shades that either match them or look well next to them. Take photos to use as a references later on.

Look around your home, closet and art collection to see what colors you naturally gravitate toward. If half your wardrobe and furniture is blue, blue may well be a color that you respond to and enjoy. Look at your fiancé’s belongings as well to study the shades toward which he is naturally drawn.

 

Sit down with your fiancé to talk about what colors you each imagine at your wedding. Look at the photos you took of the wedding sites and talk about what colors you both like. After you both choose one main color that you both like, talk about some options for accent colors. Narrow down your options to one or two accent colors.

Think about the season in which you'll be married when choosing the exact shades of the colors you've decided to use. For instance, if you've decided to use green as your main color, you may choose a bright  green for a summer wedding or a light green for a fall or winter wedding.

Visit a fabric store. Pick out bolts of fabric that match the shades you want to use in your color palette. Put all the fabric in your chosen color palette together to ensure that you like the way the colors look together, and try different shades of your chosen color if you're not satisfied with one fabric.

 Buy several swatches of each color of fabric so that you can give them to your vendors later on. This ensures that all your vendors know exactly what shades to use when they're providing your linens, decor and flowers

Try to stay away from colors that don't look good on you, or in pictures.
